Muslim Journeys in Your Community

Would you like to see public programs in your community that help inform and inspire discussion about Muslim lives and cultures?

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), in cooperation with the American Library Association (ALA), is accepting applications from libraries to receive a rich collection of resources on the people, places, histories, beliefs, practices, and cultures of Muslims in the United States and around the world.

Libraries eligible to apply for the collection include public libraries, public library systems, community college libraries, and academic libraries. You could provide a great service to your public, community college, college, or university library by making sure the library director is aware of this opportunity and demonstrating your interest in having the collection available in your community.

In addition, each library is encouraged to collaborate with a partner organization to broaden the audiences for public programs. By offering to serve as a partner organization for the project, your organization, academic department or division can help ensure that your library is competitive in the application process.

NEH and ALA have taken great care to ensure that the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf is more than a collection of items to place on library shelves. In addition to 25 engaging books, libraries will receive three films, along with public performance rights and programming guides, making it possible to host public screening and discussion programs almost immediately after the collection arrives in January 2013.

Also in January 2013, NEH and ALA will begin accepting applications from libraries for cash grants to host Let’s Talk About It reading and discussion programs in their communities. These awards (up to $4,500) enable libraries to purchase multiple copies of books, pay scholar honoraria, and participate in special orientation programs related to the Muslim Journeys themes. Only those libraries that have applied for, and been awarded, the Bookshelf grant will be eligible to apply for the cash awards.
