Dear CCHA Members and Supporters,

Greetings!   I hope that your academic year is starting off smoothly.  As many of you know, the CCHA Pacific-Western Division will be holding 2006 conference at the downtown Los Angeles Marriott from November 9-11, just two months away.  We encourage you to attend and to forward this information to colleagues and administrators who might be interested.  Despite budget cuts and travel travails, this conference is a "must attend" for humanities educators!  We have both full-conference and one-day rates available, and because Friday is Veterans Day, faculty will not need to miss classes to attend.  We are also offering an Early Bird Presidents' Special for college presidents who support at least seven faculty in attending the conference (10% registration discount and acknowledgement in the program).  The presidents have received that invitation, and you might want to confirm the offer with a request to attend.

The theme this year is "Intersections: Popular Culture and the Humanities," and thanks to submissions from many of you, the sessions look fantastic.  The conference will feature presentations such as "La Telenovela: Spanish Soaps, NBC, and Primetime," "Mapping the Intersections Between the Humanities and MYSPACE.COM," and "Wilderness to Ranch: Native Californian and American Lands and Landscapes."  Interactive workshops on topics such as "smart" classrooms and assessment will weave through the conference as well.  On Friday afternoon, we will have the honor of seeing the film "Deypika's Wedding," a documentary that centers on the wedding of a North Indian and South Indian couple (see http://www.vinodfilms.com/).  Director Vinod Kumar and Professor Meera Kumar of San Diego Mesa College will discuss the film at the screening.  On Saturday afternoon, Tony Kashani of College of San Mateo will facilitate a workshop on political representations in film.

The plenary speakers include Luis J. Rodriguez, one of the country's leading Xicano writers and the founder of Tia Chucha Press and Cultural Center; and Dr. Cynthia Young, Director of African and African Diaspora Studies at Boston College (formerly at USC).  Dr. Young's book "Soul Power: Culture, Radicalism and the Formation of a US Third World Left" (Duke University Press) will be released in October and will have its debut at the conference (see http://www.amazon.ca/Soul-Power-Culture-Radicalism-Making/dp/082233691X).  At the Saturday luncheon, we will be treated to a look at American history through the lens of baseball by Luke Salisbury and Carlos Bauer, both writers and baseball historians.

The site of the conference is the beautifully-renovated downtown Los Angeles Marriott Hotel (http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/LAXDT), and CCHA attendees will receive the excellent rate of $149 single/$169 double plus taxes (call (800) 228-9290 soon to ensure availability).  The hotel mezzanine will house an innovative conference exhibit area with alternative presses, educational resource companies, and surprising ways to experience popular culture forms.  Both the program and registration form are attached here.  Feel free to reply to this email if you have any questions.  It's going to be an excellent conference, and we hope to see you in November!
